Additional Mad Dogs & Englishmen Information

The rock & roll road show never really caught on, which is surprising given that Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen revue showed tour dogs how it's done. Recorded live at New York's Fillmore East in the spring of 1970, this CD (as well as a film of the same name) documents a slapdash extravaganza (the whole thing was conceived, organized, and abandoned over the course of two months) that overflows with big, brassy, rockin' soul. Front and center is Joe Cocker, a spastically charismatic Brit soul shouter. The bandleader is Leon Russell, playing some of the best rock piano ever waxed. And the crack company (boasting 21 singers and players) features the Rolling Stones' future horn section and Derek & the Dominoes' rhythm-section-in-waiting. Cocker shines on "Cry Me a River," "Give Peace a Chance," "The Letter," and a slew of other covers that benefit greatly from the volcanic arrangements whipped up by Russell and Chris Stainton. It may have been the Ray Charles revue for the Woodstock Generation, but, shockingly, the Genius himself hasn't made too many records that surpass this one. --Steven Stolder

What Customers Say About Mad Dogs & Englishmen:

The raw sound of Joe Cocker and Leon Russell bring back special memories. If you were a teenager in the late 60's/ early 70s this one is for you.

He is awesome live. I already have a live album of Joe Cocker, but I couldn't resist.

Thank you. Still great after all these years. I originally had this as.dare I say.an 8-track tape. I haven't had an 8-track player in years and I was missing this music, so I broke down and bought the cd.

Still love his work on Concert for Bangladesh--a couple numbers from Leon. Enjoyed several Leon Russell concerts back in the day including his magnum opus at Ontario Motor Speedway. I remember well making the pilgrimage to the movie theater to see the movie when it first came out. If you haven't seen it in a while--treat yourself to Mad Dogs and Bangladesh--and unlike George Harrison--remember Billy Preston. Years later I came across a vhs version of the movie while visiting the Lincoln Park area of Chicago and picked it up. For a brief shining all too short span of time Mr.

Combine Joe's vocals with Leon and band and it was something special. He was amazing. Joe Cocker was the finest lead vocalist in all of rock n roll. Now I watch it every Easter weekend to hear Joe say, "It's Easter, if you're living by the days." and Leon replies, "I just wanna say, don't get hung up about Easter." Have seen Joe live a few times including right after the Mad Dogs tour at the old Long Beach Arena--Stevie Wonder opened. Bottom line--1 million stars for Mad Dogs.Aloha The CD and video of this tour bear witness to this fact.

Totally blew me away.

It was unrealAs far as rating this album, it is my Number 1, all time favorite. I am buying as many albums now, for Christmas presents. Being older, sometimes has its advantages. Basically, there is not a bad song in the bunch. The normal Cocker hits of Came in through the bathroom window,The Letter, and Delta Lady, goes Soul withCry me a river, and the Blues Medley offered.Leon Russells tribute to Dylan in North Country is right there, and Give Peace a Chance, rocks I saw this production, here in Phila., at the Academy of Music. There were dogs and children running around on the stage, and all those folks on the stage.
